Art Basel 2020: The Show Must Go On!

Written by cecilia jayo

As with many events this year, Art Basel has been forced to cancel all in-person art fairs. The result is “Art Basel OVR: Miami Beach” which is open to VIPs since yesterday (December 2nd 2020), and their “online viewing rooms” will continue to be available for online viewing until December 6th, 2020.

This is incredibly unfortunate, of course, because there is no real replacement to being able to see and experience the different angles, textures, and scale that viewing art in person can provide. However, I do have to say that out of so many failed virtual shows and events this year, Art Basel has done a fantastic job at providing the viewers with several ways to explore the galleries and gather information on different artists and artworks on the scene.

As long as artists have a platform for exposure and collectors have a space to purchase art, the art world will survive, and for Art Basel, the show must go on!

Our team of journalists has been working from home, going through the different virtual viewing rooms and we will be documenting our experience throughout the week on the HIYO Design social media platforms. Please keep an eye out and contact us if you’d like to be connected to a particular art dealer or gallery from the fair.

The art shown is a grand mixture of new works created in 2020 as well as well-renowned curated artwork from past years. I strongly recommend you take your time and browse through all of the amazing artworks on display.

Despite art collectors not being able to view the art in person, it seems that there is a real hunger this year for people to own more art, so sales this year are expected to do well. After being stuck inside for so long, I imagine folks have had more time than they would like staring at the blank walls in their homes. It’s time to make your house a home! I’m thrilled that so many are now finally finding the time to fill their homes with art!

Still, I very much hope that next year we will be able to have another in-person fair. Stay safe everyone!
